This is a huge deal: The FTC proposed a sweeping ban on non-compete agreements.
30M Americans are trapped by these contracts.
The ban is estimated to increase wages by nearly $300 billion/year.
It's not a sure thing. Please flood the FTC with comments: https://www.regulations.gov/docket/FTC-2023-0007/document
📢 Thanks to Jarosław Wygoda 👏 🎉 for adding the new STORAGES 📦 setting which allows to set up multiple custom file storage backends in Django 4.2 #django #python

"I Hide Giants That I Make From Wood In The Wilderness Of The Belgian Forest
My name is Thomas Dambo. I build giant wooden trolls around the world and hide them in wilderness and forests. I build all my mythical creatures of repurposed wood to show the potential in this precious material, which is often discarded and becomes a threat to the natural world."
BBQ on the smoker has stalled at 168 F for a couple hours already. This may be a long evening waiting for it to get up to temperature. This gave me lots of time to read about on how to avoid this issue in the future and I learned a new term, the Texas Clutch. tl;dr You wrap the meat in foil when it stalls so that it gets up to pulling temperature faster.
Random drug testing has been introduced at work.
I can't wait to find out which one they want me to try first
Wow, TIL that #python's `from __future__ import annotations` can affect your program even if there are no annotations in the file!

#Security friends, what are your fav resources to share with young people (think high school and early college age) curious about #cybersecurity – thinking along the lines of newsletters, podcasts, social accounts to follow, maybe books? More in the vein of #cybercrime than say appsec, for the crowd I’m thinking of anyway. Please boost for reach! I’ll curate responses 🙏❤️🔏
I highly recommend supporting the Standard Ebooks project. 📚

Blue Jay
This bird was around yesterday. It's the first I've seen in a while.
"Thousands of Blue Jays migrate in flocks along the Great Lakes and Atlantic coasts, but much about their migration remains a mystery. Some are present throughout winter in all parts of their range. ... Some individual jays migrate south one year, stay north the next winter, and then migrate south again the next year. No one has worked out why they migrate when they do." - allaboutbirds.org
TIL there's a technical name for why ideas happen in the shower: the "default mode network" is a pattern of brain activity, measurable using fMRI, that happens when we're unfocussed. When the brain goes into idle mode (reduced activity), this part of the brain actually becomes *more* active. What does the default mode network do? Research is ongoing, but part of it definitely seems to be making connections, which is associated with curiosity and creativity.
I had some time this week to work on https://djangopackages.org features this week that have been partial works in progress or that were blocked by needing more data.
One that sticks out to me is some level of "Django Readiness" or even "Wagtail Readiness" which is heavily inspired by https://pyreadiness.org/
The goal is to see where the top-x Django packages are in terms of supporting version-x of Django/Python etc.
