Maniac Mansion exists because Gary and I were too stupid to know it couldn't be done. As I get older and more experienced I am losing the ability to be too stupid to know things can't be done. Experience can be a curse.
@grumpygamer Just out of sheer curiosity; why don't you list Zak McKracken amongst the games you've made? (It's the one I like the most).
@grumpygamer @stooovie I love this take. So many of my best ideas were ones where I was like “this is a stupid idea but what if…”
Stupid is sometimes the best.
@grumpygamer We need to bring back tentacle monsters!
@grumpygamer “there’s always a key under the doormat”. And even if it isn’t, it’s worth checking alternatives (like bushes)… there was a lot of philosophy in ‘Maniac Mansion’ :)
@grumpygamer same reason Goldeneye made it to the N64 as the story goes. Thank goodness for the ignorance that comes with a lack of experience 😁
@grumpygamer Still one of my favorite games!
@grumpygamer thanks for it! It was a huge part of my childhood and even my children know about it! Long live the purple tentacle!
@grumpygamer Thank you for being stupid. Your stupid impossible game is my favorite game of all time.
@grumpygamer The WILD things I wrote when I was learning code... I didn't care if the code was trash on all levels, I was just making things, hacking projects in a few evenings, putting them live without a second thought.
Not knowing that you cannot do what you're doing is a blessing.
@grumpygamer YEAH!!! Maniac Mansion!!!! 🥰
@grumpygamer I just want say thank you. Maniac Mansion was the start of my #pointandclick journey which ended in my own pointandclick #adventuregame named "Argh! Earthlings!" @arghearthlings
And guess what, my game has a functional microwave oven, too. 😅😇
@grumpygamer one of my all time favorite adventure games. and such a banger of a soundtrack
@grumpygamer Which were the hardest parts of the development?
It was the very first adventure I played and I'm glad you did it, even it was impossible ☺️
@grumpygamer Memories! So much memories! 🥰 @GambaJo
@grumpygamer REALLY get used to first principles thinking can be a solution ..
@grumpygamer I think modernizing design ideas from this game is part of what has me excited to make an adventure game now. I'm glad I'm making design choices that I don't know can be done but what feels right for adventure games now after reading this
@grumpygamer That's why I love being stupid...
@grumpygamer This hits hard. 😊 Always trying to find that "beginner's mind" mode both to make neat things and have fun.
@grumpygamer I deliberately curate naïveté for this express purpose.
This often involves using things I’ve never used before specifically because they will be harder than what I know.
It’s worked so far…
@grumpygamer That's the first law of Clarke (as in Arthur C. Clarke) :
« When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong. »
@grumpygamer
I just spotted Wendy on the cover of the "Retro Gamer" magazine.
@grumpygamer what makes it even more impressive: wasn’t the original Scumm engine written in 6502 assembly for the C64? #respect
@grumpygamer The first PC game I ever bought with pocket money (still have the box and receipt!)
Thanks for doing it!
Really shaped a life
@uoou Because I didn't make Zak, @DavidBFox did. I don't take credit for things I didn't do.
@grumpygamer @DavidBFox Fair enough! (wikipedia lists you as a designer)
@uoou @DavidBFox Wikipedia is wrong about so many things. The Monkey Island page is filled with made up crap.
I guess you have, as Tolkien once lamented, been "made an object of fiction while still alive".
